ATP Saturday – as it happened

This content was published 11 years ago. It may refer to a past edition of the Internazionali d’Italia.

2149: Djokovic has done it. 7-4 in the tiebreak. After Federer’s stunning comeback into the match, Nole was able to regain control. He’s ecstatic. That was a good win and he will play Nadal in the final just like last year. Who knows if the outcome will be similar. Very difficult to predict on today’s evidence. Join us again tomorrow for what is a mouthwatering match.

2139: Federer cannot ride the wave as he goes back into unforced error mode after briefly threatening Djokovic to 15-30. Time for a tiebreak.

2135: Has the tide turned? Federer serves to love to lead 6-5. The crowd are absolutely loving this.

2132: Well, well. Federer saves match point with Djokovic serving at 5-4 and then breaks with his very first break point of the match as Nole goes long. Back to 5-5.

2121: Too easy for Djokovic. He serves out to love. Federer will serve to stay in the match at 3-5.

2118: Federer cannot maintain the level from earlier in the set, Djokovic raises his including a glorious backhand down the line which was hit with incredible force. He breaks the Fed serve and is two games away from the match at 4-3.

2108: An ever so slight dip in Djokovic’s game and Federer sniffs a chance. The Swiss has picked up slightly and leads 3-2 with serve in the second.

2101: Federer somehow holds to make it 2-1 but he is being outplayed here and the crowd know it, desperately trying to cheer him on through his slump.

2052: Respite for Federer. After an uncharacteristic 19 unforced errors in the first set, Fed holds serve just about. He’s still rattled though.

2045: Djokovic wraps up the first set 6-2. Federer forced a deuce but then his forehand into the tramlines hands the set to his rival. Just 35 minutes, half the time it took Nadal to win his first set.

2039: Djokovic is blowing Federer away at the moment (and we don’t even have the wind of last week). A second break of serve gives the Serb a 5-2 lead and surely he will wrap up the first set.

2024: It’s Djokovic that has struck first, disappointing service game from Federer and Nole capitalises with an unforced error by the Swiss at 15-40 giving Djokovic a 2-1 lead.

2018: 1-1, far more convincing service game for Federer than Djokovic. Fed takes Nole to deuce but finds the net a couple of times to keep things on serve.

2010: It’s time for the big one. Djokovic v Federer about to begin. Federer leads the head-to-head 14-10 but Djokovic has won four out the last five. Roger to serve first.

1818: The match for Nadal and a second set bagel for Ferrer. Very harsh indeed. It was a far closer second set than that scoreline and Ferrer can consider himself unfortunate. He more than competed with his countryman but in the end Nadal found that little bit extra and he’s in the final again.

1809: It’s 4-0 Nadal second set but that does not tell how much of a battle it still is for him. It takes 13 minutes to break the Ferrer serve for a second time. This is not over yet despite the scoreline.

1752: Nadal takes a 2-0 lead at the start of the second set and is starting to dominate (if that’s the right word to use in such a tight contest).

1737: Incredibly tense set but Nadal takes it 8-6 on the ‘breaker. The tiebreak mirrored the entire first set: neck and neck. Nadal eventually claims the mini break at 6-6 with a brilliant pass after retrieving a drop shot and Ferrer goes long at set point. That set was one hour and 26 minutes alone.

1725: Tiebreak time. Ferrer looking in extraordinary form and he is making life very hard for Nadal. The left hander holds out to 30 with a beautiful forehand down the line.

1716: Nadal’s best service game of the match. He sees it out to love and it’s 5-5. Plenty of work still to be done in this set though.

1708: Real cat and mouse tennis as we reach the business end of the set. Nadal has to save yet another break point but holds on to make it 4-4.

1649: Back comes Nadal. Some fine returning and winners and he breaks back at the first time of asking. 3-2 Ferrer.

1646: This time Ferrer takes his chance, on his ninth break point of the match. 3-1 to Ferrer.

1631: If Rafa was in any doubt about how much of a grind this match may be, his first service game has reminded him just what a player his countryman is. Nadal had to come back from 0-40 to take the game and save a total of seven break points in all. It’s 1-1 and Ferrer is looking the better player in the opening moments.

1615: Confident start for Ferrer who holds serve to take a 1-0 lead.

1553: Good afternoon and welcome to live coverage of the men’s semi-finals at Foro Italico. First up it will be Nadal v Ferrer and then this evening it’s Federer v Djokovic. I’m going Nadal in two and Federer in three. Tweet me your predictions @ianbakersport. The good news is there are no retirements and the two Spanish players should be out on court any moment now. Nadal has won 14 out of 18 meetings between the pair and beat Ferrer in the Barcelona final.
