Rafa Nadal secured an epic win against Andy Murray to make it to the Rome Masters semi-final.
The king of clay came from behind to win 1-6 6-3 7-5 following a two hour and forty minute battle on Centre court.
Nadal, who will face Grigor Dimitrov, said: “With the 6-1 in the first set I really didn’t feel I was playing bad. Instead I was probably playing tactically not good, but my psychology was better and I felt more positive in my movement.
“I went more to the net in the second set and played with more passion. During the night the ball got slower and the bounces got slower.
“I played more against his forehand waiting for the right shot. Then I went to the net to give him the Nadal he could not defend and I gave him problems.
“Every victory is special, but this is important for me against one of the best players in the world. It means a lot to me.
“Physically I am preparing myself very well. And if my mental part works well I will be there sooner or later. I played one of my best matches for a while.
“This match gives me the power and confidence.
“I didn’t that’ve negative thoughts throughout the match. I closed the match at the first opportunity and taking out all the negative thoughts.”
The win takes Nadal’s record against Murray to won 14 and lost just six.
And Murray added: “I was expecting to start playing well around this time, so that’s pleasing.
“I was disappointed with the game I played at 4-2 in the third though.
“Against him you don’t get a load of chances and he finished the game incredibly well.
“Physically he was stronger than me at the end – but it was a good match.
“I would have liked to have won because I had the opportunities and I started the match better than him. I felt going into the French I would be playing good tennis.
“I don’t fell like people have respected the severity of having back surgery, it takes time and I feel I am getting closer to where I want to be. Tonight was the best I hit the ball and best I felt physically since the surgery.”
