WTA Wednesday – as it happened

This content was published 11 years ago. It may refer to a past edition of the Internazionali d’Italia.

2231: After competing so well at the start of the second set, Peer really fell away towards the end. Azarenka has rounded off an encouraging 6-1, 6-2 to end proceedings here in Rome. She will play Dominika Cibulkova tomorrow in the third round. Thanks for your company today, see you tomorrow.

2219: A good start to the second set for Peer but that only makes Azarenka’s returning more aggressive. The world No.1 eventually breaks in the fifth game of the second set. Peer’s second serve too short and duly punished with a backhand cross court return winner. 3-2 Azarenka.

2156: 22 minutes is all it has taken Azarenka to wrap up the first set. A second break of serve takes it to 5-1 and the Belarusian serves to love.

2152: Cracking start to the match for Azarenka who initially took a 3-0 lead after breaking the Peer serve at the first time of asking. It’s now 4-1.

2126: Time for Azarenka vs Shahar Peer then on Centrale. Not only as Peer never beaten the Belarusian but she has also never won a set against her either.

1931: A comfortable third set sees Venus wrap things up 6-1. She will now face Sam Stosur, last year’s finalist. The women’s action will continue at 9pm with Victorian Azarenka up against Shahar Peer. Azarenka has won all three meetings between the pair.

1918: Venus should have this wrapped up now. Makarova’s unforced errors count increases and the elder Williams sister has a double-break advantage at 4-1.

1856: A cracking tiebreak sees Venus clinch it 9-7. In the end her forceful play and lack of unforced errors proved decisive.

1845: Victory for smiley Ana Ivanovic – and what a convincing one at that. She’s beaten Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-2, 6-1 in one hour and two minutes. Maria Sharapova awaits in round three in what appears to be an exciting match tomorrow. Venus and Makarova into a first set tiebreaker.

1832: Venus breaks back courtesy of some superb returning while Makarova was serving for the set at 5-4. Now can she build on that game? Ivanovic now has a 4-1 second set lead over Soler-Espinosa.

1809: Terrible start for Venus who is really looking out of sorts. She was 3-1 down before saving break points to hold serve. Meanwhile first set for the improving Ivanovic against Soler-Espinosa.

1752: A shriek of delight from Serena who has come through a difficult match to progress to round three. She looks extremely relieved. Anabel Medina Garrigues next, but first a bit of sleep for the exhausted American?

1747: It’s been cat and mouse tennis in the final set and it’s quite exciting. Petrova has just saved three break points at 3-4 but can’t save a fourth and Serena will now, decisively you would assume, serve for the match. A feast of women’s action right now. Serena’s sister Venus is about to take on Ekaterina Makarova, the player she beat at Wimbledon last year. Ana Ivanovic is also on court, and has broken the Silvia Soler-Espinosa serve a 3-1 lead.

1706: Serena just keeps up the relentless pressure on Petrova’s serve though to break again and win the set 6-2. Much more convincing from the American after a bit of a slow start. A decider on Centrale.

1655: A second break of serve allows Serena to serve for the set. But Petrova saves one game and it is now 5-2 to the American.

1645: Serena pegs Petrova back to deuce and then snatches a break to go ahead 3-1. That last hold could turn out to be very crucial indeed.

1634: Possible turning point. Serena’s had to dig really deep to save five break points including a recovery from 0-40 down. But holds she does to make it 2-1.

1617: First set to Petrova, 6-4. Serena’s game improved as the set wore on but the Russian has been too strong so far.

1548: At the moment, Serena is looking a little jaded. Early break to Petrova  who leads 2-1 with several unforced errors from the American. Meanwhile Dominika Cibulkova has won the first set against Italian Karin Knapp 6-3.

1540: Look who we have here. It feels like déjà vu. Serena Williams was only on court 15 hours ago but now she’s back to take on Nadia Petrova. Serena leads 6-3 on the head-to-head.

1442: Wozniacki is out, and unfortunately she has had to retire at 4-0 down in the second set. Illness appears to be the problem and Medina Garrigues progresses to a possible third round meeting with Serena Williams.

1431: Victory for Sam Stosur 6-3, 7-5 and disappointment for the home fans as Sara Errani is out despite a spirited second set fight. The Aussie has a potential meeting with Venus if the American can beat Makarova later.

1420: Wozniacki’s woes continue and she looks to be heading out of the Interzionali BNL d’Italia. She has been broken twice by Anabel Medina Garrigues and 3-0 down in the second. The Dane is on the brink.

1405: Victory for Julia Goerges and what a convincing one it was against an out of sorts Marion Bartoli, 6-3, 6-1. We’re guaranteed a German in the quarter-finals as Goerges will take on countrywoman Angelique Kerber next.

1353: Signs of improvement from Wozniacki but she has not been able to save the set. Medina Garrigues takes the first set 6-4 in the end. Goerges is two games from an upset of Bartoli at 4-1 in the second. Better second set from Errani who is 3-1 to the good having lost the first to Stosur.

1343: We have a shock! Third seed Agnieszka Radwanska is out. She has lost in the third set 6-1 to Petra Cetkovska. Disappointment for the Pole. Elsewhere Sam Stosur has taken the first set against Sara Errani while Julia Goerges also has the one set advantage against Marion Bartoli.

1307: Really not the start Caroline Wozniacki was after. She is playing on Court 2 against Anabel Medina Garrigues but has been broken twice and is trailing 3-0. Radwanska levels at one set all versus Cetkovska. Sam Stosur vs Sara Errani and Marion Bartoli vs Julia Goerges have both just started in an eventful period of women’s tennis.

1241: Victory for Pennetta to delight the home fans, 6-2, 6-3. Stephens is out and the Italian crowd go wild. Na Li had some trouble in the second set but she’s come back to take it 7-5 against Benesova. Pennetta will now play the winner of Radwanska and Cetkovska. Radwanska has come back in the second set to take a 4-2 lead. Kerber has defeated King 6-3, 6-2. Marion Bartoli or Julia Goerges await in round three. Out on Court 2, Caroline Wozniacki is about to get underway against Anabel Medina Garrigues. The Dane leads 4-1 in the head-to-head.

1200: Good morning/afternoon/evening and welcome to Wednesday of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. Women’s action has already kicked off. Sloane Stephens’ great run appears to be in jeopardy with Flavia Pennetta already taking the first set 6-2. Li Na has also enjoyed a comfortable opener 6-1 against Iveta Benesova. Petra Cetkovska won her first set 6-4 against Agnieszka Radwanska, the third seed, who is making her first appearance this year. Angelique Kerber took the first set 6-3 against Vania King. Later in the day we have Victoria Azarenka in action along with the Williams sisters on another day full of action here in Rome. Remember you can give all your feedback on Twitter @ianbakersport.
