Carla Suarez Navarro is out to go one better than her Miami final recently as she hopes her fine form on clay can upset Maria Sharapova.
The Spaniard beat second seed Simona Halep in the semi-final and will now look to get the better of the Russian and cause a minor shock on the final day at the Foro Italico.
“I feel better on clay so we will see what happen,” said the tenth seed ahead of the match that will start at 1.30pm on Centre Court. “Maria is very good mentally, she’s really strong, she plays aggressive in the important moments. Maria can focus on her game and also serve really good in important moments.”
Sharapova knows all too well that she has to be on her game and more if she is to get the better of a player who appears at home on the red clay as temperatures are expected to hit 30 degrees.
“With the weather I think the clay will be a bit drier,” she said.
“I think she loves the surface. She grew up on it. I think the couple of times I have lost to her, I know what a difficult player she can be.
“She is playing some of the best tennis she has played and has one of the best one handed backhands on the women’s tour. She’s done a lot of good things.”
The women’s singles final follows the women’s doubles match between top seeds Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza against Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic, the third seeds. That clash gets underway at 11am.
