Mladenovic, Cornet, Sakkari advance through qualifying

Kristina Mladenovic, Alize Cornet and Maria Sakkari wasted little time in booking their spots in the main draw as they defeated their second round qualifying opponents in straight sets on Sunday at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.

Mladenovic was the first player to win through qualifying, defeating No. 2 seed Amanda Anisimova 6-1 6-4 in the opening match on Court Pietrangeli. The Frenchwoman, who won the doubles title here in 2015 with Timea Babos, needed 75 minutes to find a way past the 17-year-old American and secure a place in the main draw at the Foro Italico for the sixth time.

No. 3 seed Alize Cornet also flew the flag for France, advancing to the main draw after she overcame Kristyna Pliskova 6-4 7-6(6) while there was also joy for Greece’s Maria Sakkari, the top seed in qualifying, who ousted former Top 10 player Andrea Petkovic 6-2 7-5.

There was an upset on Court 3 when Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek defeated No. 4 seed Ons Jabeur in straight sets. Qualifying for her first Premier 5 tournament is yet another milestone for the 21-year-old who recorded a career-high ranking of No. 63 last month and reached the quarterfinals at Bogota.

Joining Zidansek in the main draw is her countrywoman Polona Hercog, who survived a lengthy three hour 23 minute tussle against Viktorija Golubic to advance through qualifying. Hercog has also been looking comfortable on clay in recent weeks and won her first WTA title in seven years at Lugano in April. Her 7-5 4-6 6-4 victory over the Swiss player will serve as a further confidence boost as she looks to continue her run of form.

Former Italian Open semi-finalist Irina-Camelia Begu booked her spot in the main draw with a 6-2 6-4 victory over Olympic champion Monica Puig and joining her in the main draw is Mona Barthel who dashed Italian hopes with a straight sets triumph over wildcard Cristiana Ferrando.

Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson claimed the remaining qualifying spot with a 7-5 7-5 win over Sam Stosur.
